4th Assembly District Update: February 23, 2024

Honoring Our Home Town Hero

It was an honor to host our Hometown Hero Sandra Ranck and her family at the Capitol last week to be recognized before the Assembly. Sandra was honored with the Assembly Hometown Hero award for her work in educating the public about the opioid crisis — to which she and her family are personally and tragically connected. I am so grateful to have people like Sandra in our communities who are willing to share their stories and take this issue head-on.

Two Bills Pass the Assembly This Week

Wisconsin State Rep. David Steffen discusses his bill to create a transportation tax credit for people who are legally blind to help cover the costs of getting to and from work.

On Thursday, the Assembly wrapped up its legislative session with three back-to-back days of floor sessions. Two of my bills passed the Assembly this week! Here’s what each of them will do:

– AB 408 will create a transportation tax credit for people who are legally blind to help cover the costs of getting to and from work. This bill is important because the unemployment rate for individuals who are visually impaired is 70%. That means a large segment of qualified, skilled workers are kept on the workforce sidelines. This bill will alleviate some of the burden that comes from getting to and from work for these individuals.

– AB 371 will eliminate a burdensome and outdated personal property tax for telecommunication companies. When the state budget passed earlier this session, the personal property tax was repealed for most businesses. Telephone companies, however, were not included. This bill simply extends the repeal to include these companies so they are not burdened with an inefficient and antiquated tax.

Both of these bills passed the Assembly with overwhelming bipartisan support and are on their way to the Governor for his approval.

As this legislative session comes to a close, please know my office is still open and available should you need assistance with a state matter. It’s been an honor serving as your representative in Madison this session, and I look forward to continuing to serve the people of the 4th Assembly District in the future.
