The legislative district maps in Wisconsin have experienced another round of changes. Back in February, Governor Evers proposed new maps which the legislature agreed to and passed in both the Assembly and Senate. These maps were signed into law by the Governor.
Previously, the Wisconsin Supreme Court had deemed the old maps as constitutional, but recently, a change occurred. The new Supreme Court of Wisconsin decided to bypass the previous ruling and declared the maps unconstitutional, effectively negating the previous decision.
Instead of letting the new Supreme Court and their hired consultants manipulate the maps, which would be against the state constitution, the legislature took a different route. The constitution in Wisconsin mandates that the legislature, a political body, should be the one to establish the legislative districts. By accepting the governor’s map, the legislature prevented further lawsuits from reaching the Supreme Court. This move also curtailed the spending of taxpayers’ money on legal battles over the maps.
In the District
Rep. Goeben received a heartwarming welcome from students and staff at St. Peter Lutheran School in Appleton. The Representative met with students and staff and spoke to the upper grade levels about civics and the Wisconsin Legislature. She provided the school with Wisconsin State maps and Blue Books with study guides. The study guides are designed for upper elementary students and consists of questions about Wisconsin state government and interesting facts about Wisconsin.
