Capping Tuition Bill Has Hearing in State Senate

Last week, I testified at a public hearing held by the State Senate Committee on Universities and Technical Colleges on the Senate version of  Assembly Bill 406 which places tuition caps on the University of Wisconsin System. AB 406 prohibits UW from raising resident tuition by more than the increase in inflation. It is important that higher education is affordable for all Wisconsin students, and this bill holds UW accountable in ensuring that resident’s tuition is not increased by arbitrary amounts. As a member of NCSL’s taskforce on Higher Education, I have looked for ways to make higher education affordable while maintaining, and improving, student outcomes. This bill is a step in the right direction to increase the affordability of Wisconsin higher education.

Veterans Tuition Bill Receives Hearing in Senate
[see featured photo above] The State Senate Committee on Universities and Technical Colleges also held a public hearing for Senate Bill 59, which I am the author of in the Assembly. This bill tweaks the residency rules for veterans and their families to make it easier for them to get tuition and fee remission at UW System schools or Wisconsin Technical Colleges. Right now, they qualify only if they’re Wisconsin residents or have lived here for five years. My bill scraps that five-year wait, so veterans moving to Wisconsin can access funding for their degrees right away. I’m proud to have authored this legislation to honor our veterans and make Wisconsin a welcoming home for them and their families.
Capitol Meeting

I met with the Wisconsin Cheesemakers Association this week to discuss problems facing Wisconsin’s dairy manufacturers. As a member of the Assembly Committee on Agriculture I always appreciate hearing from WCMA and look forward to our continued work. Thank you Amelia and Rebekah for stopping by!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This disease touches too many lives—our mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, and friends—and I’m urging everyone to spread awareness, encourage early screenings, and support local efforts like fundraisers and walks.
