Happy Friday!
This week was both busy and highly productive. We engaged in several meaningful, in-depth discussions on key priority pieces of legislation, while also participating in important public hearings in critical committees, including the Senate Committee on Mental Health and the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Revenue. In addition, we held numerous constructive meetings both in Madison and around our area.
We were happy to welcome a diverse group of advocacy organizations and stakeholders to the Capitol. These productive conversations centered on existing bills as well as potential future policy initiatives surrounding public health, boosting aid for public defenders, and addressing workforce needs. Among the many groups we hosted were representatives from the Boys and Girls Club of Oshkosh, UW-Whitewater, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Stout, UW-Stevens Point, Concordia University, and the State Public Defender’s Office. It was especially valuable to hear directly from these organizations about how proposed legislation is likely to affect their sectors, communities, and the folks they serve.
The Senate Committee on Agriculture and Revenue and the Senate Committee on Mental Health both conducted important public hearings this week to help advance legislation, including “truth-in-labelling’ requirements for lab-grown products to protect our farmers and reforming opioid treatment rules. I also had the opportunity to spend time at the Research in the Rotunda event, where I connected with students and faculty from several of our University of Wisconsin campuses. The research these students are conducting is truly impressive and inspiring!
I hope you and your family enjoy a wonderful weekend as we move on to our “third winter!”
