There’s a lot of “stuff” being shoveled about the greatness of Artificial Intelligence and how it is the dream tool for all of mankind. In my view A.I. is a tool at best and a “Terminator-type” nightmare at worst. Although the truth is probably somewhere in between, one can’t help but wonder where it will all end. And like all tools its ability to do either good or harm is mostly in the hands of the user. Unfortunately, because the users will all be human there is a lot of probability that A.I. will be hijacked and used for a big bunch of evil doings along the way.
One such evil course, as pointed in an Epoch Times piece How AIs Can Reinforce Our False Beliefs | The Epoch Times is how the A.I. that most of us currently use can be applied to manipulate our thoughts and behaviors by blowing an incredible amount of smoke up our butts in such a fashion that we believe it is all real and true.
“A new study from the University of Exeter suggests that AI chatbots can actively engage with and strengthen users’ false beliefs. From personal narratives to conspiracy theories, the interactive, “friendly,” and affirming nature of AI chatbots can deepen users’ existing delusions.
The study, conducted by Dr. Lucy Osler, examined how AI can participate in and validate users’ errant beliefs, including helping form false memories or reinforcing delusional thinking.”
I’m going to more than “suggest” it. I’m going to flat-out claim that this type of thing is going on and growing at an exponential potential. I base that claim on both the evil nature of man and that of his out-of-control governments. Anyone care to argue the point?
“As Dr. Osler stated in an article in University of Exeter News, “By interacting with conversational AI, people’s own false beliefs can not only be affirmed but can more substantially take root and grow as the AI builds upon them. This happens because Generative AI often takes our own interpretation of reality as the ground upon which conversation is built.””
In other words, A.I. feeds you crap based on what you don’t know.
” The problem of AI’s co-creating delusional beliefs has to do more fundamentally with our misidentifying AIs as conscious intelligences who can offer real judgments on our fantasies (such as telling us we are “well-trained” and “impressive”).”
And that’s the bottom line. A lot of us treat A.I. as if it’s human and not the manipulative, poorly written, garbage-in-garbage-out computer program that it is. We, The People, need to demand that A.I. be designated a computer program and that our governments force industry to do what they do to cigarettes; put the needed labels and warnings on all A.I. and A.I.-generated products.
