Happy Friday! I hope you and your family had a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving holiday.
This past week, the legislature quickly got back into the swing of things, scheduling committee hearings and numerous meetings with various stakeholders as we prepare for the spring session next year.
One focus this week revolved around agriculture, as we met with representatives from the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association. We discussed critical initiatives aimed at supporting our local farmers, including a proposal I was proud to co-author, which seeks to ease regulatory burdens on the use of certified seed potatoes, while maintaining rigorous safety standards for growing and consumption. Additionally, we discussed in more detail the proposed legislation for a sandhill crane harvest. While these are fascinating birds, their rapidly growing population has led to significant and documented crop damage for farmers, potentially costing millions of dollars, and this possible harvest season proposal continues to move through the legislative process.
We also met with the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth. This organization is advocating for aligning Wisconsin’s sentencing laws with several recent decisions from the U.S. Supreme Court to create a more streamlined and fair approach to youth sentencing nationwide.
Our discussions also included a productive meeting with One City Schools, a public charter school that offers an affordable, high-performing educational alternative for families, where we explored potential legislation concerning demonstration public schools. This model, used successfully in other states, allows for the testing of innovative education ideas and teaching methods in real-world classroom settings before broader implementation.
Lastly, I want to extend a sincere thank you to the folks in Wautoma who hosted me for an incredibly insightful tour of several local sites that recently received funding from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program for important local projects, including sites on the Pine River and the Lake Drive Culvert Replacement. As a strong supporter of finding a permanent pathway to save and fund this program, seeing the direct local impact was truly invaluable.
I hope you have a great week as we head deeper into the holiday season, and I look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming parades and events around our area!
