Happy Friday! I hope you had a good week.
This week, I had the opportunity to attend a state legislative exchange conference on health care. It was a valuable opportunity to connect with fellow nurses, medical providers, and legislators from other states. We collaborated on various health care initiatives, and I appreciated hearing diverse perspectives on what’s working—and what could have been done better—in their respective states. Fostering this kind of collaborative environment is essential for generating new, effective ideas that will ultimately help improve health outcomes for Wisconsin residents.
In Madison, a bill I authored, Senate Bill 326, was heard during a Committee on Agriculture and Revenue Public Hearing. Wisconsin’s natural resources, especially our lakes, rivers, and rich soil for agriculture, are essential to our future. This bill offers a proactive and voluntary solution by establishing a Nutrient Loss Reduction Grant Program designed to directly support our agricultural community. The program would support the necessary conservation practices to protect our precious natural resources.
I was also happy to see action taken on Senate Bill 485 in the Committee on Mental Health, Substance Abuse Prevention, Children and Families. This is an important measure I introduced with Senator James that would allow for video monitoring or recording in residential care centers for children and youth, group homes, and shelter care facilities. Utilizing devices like security cameras is intended to ensure that vulnerable children and the elderly are being cared for responsibly and safely. Currently, these facilities are allowed to have live-feed cameras, but cannot record that film for security purposes. I hope we can move this bill out of committee and onto the floor for a final vote in the near future. This would assist
Additionally, I want to highlight the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) launching new consumer protection outreach toolkits. The digital toolkits are hosted on DATCP’s website at DATCPOutreachToolkit.wi.gov. Currently, the toolkits cover four topics: Common Scams and Fraud, Identity Theft, Safe Online Shopping, and Consumer Protection for Young Adults. These toolkits contain downloadable materials that can be used by educators, businesses, community organizations, and other groups to teach students, staff, group members, and other audiences about common consumer protection issues – and tips on how to prevent and protect against scams and frauds. For more information, please read DATCP’s news release, visit the new consumer protection outreach toolkits webpage, and review DATCP’s additional consumer protection resources.
I hope you have a great weekend!
