The Importance of Nuclear Power
I believe nuclear power is experiencing a renaissance right now and Wisconsin should be leading the way. Energy demands are expected to double, that’s right double, over the next decade and we need to find the energy somewhere.
Why Nuclear Power?
- Small footprint
- Nuclear plants are not like solar and wind farms. They don’t need thousands of acres to produce a few megawatts.
- Reliability
- Nuclear plants have predicable refueling cycles so the grid can compensate and they aren’t affected by global fuel prices
- Green Energy
- Nuclear power does not have any carbon emissions, making it one of the cleanest energy sources on the planet
- Good Jobs
- The nuclear industry has some of the highest paying jobs in the energy sector for both white-collar and blue-collar workers

- On July 2 AB 108 was signed into law as Act 12 by Governor Evers. I authored AB 108 to help meet rising energy demands with carbon-free, domestic, safe, reliable, and affordable energy. This law requires the Public Service Commission to conduct a nuclear power siting study and to submit a report to the legislature containing the results of the study. The study will identify nuclear power generation opportunities on both existing nuclear and non-nuclear power generation sites, identify new nuclear power and fusion energy generation sites that aren’t currently dedicated to power generation, identify sites for the development of nuclear fission and fusion technologies, develop guidance for advanced nuclear fission and fusion reactors.
- SB 124 creates the State of Wisconsin Nuclear Power Summit Board with the task of organizing and hosting a nuclear power summit in Madison. On July 2 it was signed into law as Act 11 by Governor Evers.
- Over the summer I have been meeting with various energy groups to develop legislation to secure the future of nuclear power in Wisconsin.
- I am working on bills that will help lay the groundwork for nuclear energy investments and options today to bolster the safe, reliable, and affordable energy of tomorrow.
