Happy Birthday, Village of Allouez!
The year 2023 marks the 150th anniversary of the Village of Allouez. This community has a long and storied history within Northeast Wisconsin, and was originally founded as the Town of Allouez in 1874. In 1985, the Town of Allouez was incorporated into a Village, and has since grown into a thriving community of 14,000 hardworking individuals. I am proud to represent such a wonderful group of Wisconsinites.
Stopping Evers’ Spending Spree
This week, the legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance began their first round of votes on agency budget requests. After removing over 500 non-fiscal policy items from the Governor’s budget proposal, the committee returned to the base budget. “Returning to base” means going back to the levels of funding in the previous budget, which were approved by the legislature and signed by the Governor last session.
To understand just how much spending the Governor’s proposal included, here are a few takeaways:
- Increased taxes and fees on Wisconsinites by over $2 billion
- Created over 800 new government positions
- General fund spending increased by 22.5%
By contrast, Republicans have put forth budgets over the last decade that have done the following:
- Created the largest rainy day fund in state history
- Cut taxes by over $22 billion since 2011
- Resulted in the lowest tax burden on record
I look forward to voting on a budget that will truly benefit Wisconsin taxpayers and families.
Kids Online Safety Act Introduced
On Monday I introduced the Kids Online Safety Act, which takes aim at the negative impacts of social media on our youth. As social media use has grown in the last several years, so have the harmful effects on its users. One particularly vulnerable population that makes up a large portion of social media users is children between the ages of 13-17. More needs to be done to hold social media companies accountable for their detrimental impacts on this age group. This bill gives parents tools to make sure their kids are protected from the harms of online activity. To learn more about what this legislation would do, see highlights from my press release below.
