Budget Breakdown: Transportation

This week’s Budget Breakdown is all about Transportation! Our budget invests in safer, stronger roads with a 3% annual increase in county and municipal general transportation aids, $100M in one-time funding for the Local Roads Improvement Program – Supplemental (LRIP-S), and $322.49M for the State Highway Rehabilitation Program—ensuring our roads remain safe, reliable, and well-maintained. On top of that, $600,000 for a work zone safety pilot program helps protect both drivers and workers. We’re also modernizing vehicle services with $4.5M to cover the ongoing costs of issuing license plates and introducing two new specialty plates: the sleek “Blackout” design and the bold black-and-yellow “Retro” plate, with $25 collected by DOT from each registration. Finally, $6M annually for driver education grants expands access to driver’s ed for more young people, improves road safety, and helps students gain independence and future job opportunities. These investments keep Wisconsin moving safely and efficiently today while building a stronger transportation system for tomorrow.

Happy Labor Day!

Big shoutout to my staff—the hardest working team around. They put in so much work all year, we had to give them a federally mandated excuse to take the day off.

But on a serious note, thank you to all American workers whose dedication and effort keep our communities and country moving forward!
