56th Assembly District Update: January 12, 2024

Legislative Update

On Tuesday, I testified in favor of Assembly Bill 749, a bill that will help ensure election integrity by having the non-partisan Legislative Audit Bureau conduct regular, random audits of elections after each general election.

The Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities, chaired by Wisconsin State Rep. Dave Murphy, held a public hearing on a number of bills.

On Thursday, the committee I chair, the Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities, held a public hearing on a number of bills, including:

Assembly Bill 413 – Prohibits institutions of higher education from conducting gain of function research on potentially pandemic pathogens.

Assembly Bill 540 – Requires the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation to award grants to political subdivisions of the state for costs associated with the redevelopment of buildings or other sites owned by the political subdivision on a UW System branch campus that are or will no longer be used for academic purposes.  A branch campus is any of the former two-year college campuses that were partnered with a four-year UW System campus in the 2018 UW System restructuring.

Assembly Bill 610 – Provides for waivers from immunization requirements at institutions of higher education.
