5th Assembly District Update: April 27, 2024

Energy Choice

In basic economics, oil and gas are necessary to produce, transport, store, and sell almost every product in America. When energy prices increase, the costs are passed to the consumer resulting in higher prices for food, clothing, and shelter.

Wisconsin’s natural gas and oil industry supports 161,000 jobs, contributes $174 billion to the state economy, and provides the state with $227.7 million in wildlife conservation and funding. Today, The average price of a gallon of gas in Wisconsin is about $3.38. As we roll into the most expensive gas months, May, June, and July, expect the price to continue to rise.

Unfortunately, Governor Evers vetoed three bills which aimed to continue to allow consumer choice.

Assembly Bill 141: This bill aimed to prevent the state or local governments from dictating or limiting the kind of energy source used to power a device. The veto means Wisconsin residents could see future bans on gas-powered leaf blowers, lawnmowers, snow blowers, chainsaws, and rototillers, and the like.

Assembly Bill 142: This bill prohibits the state or local governments from dictating or limiting the sale or use of a motor vehicle based on the power source. The veto allows the government in Wisconsin to ban gas-powered cars or trucks.

Senate Bill 49: This legislation stops the state or local government from dictating or limiting the type of utility service based on the energy source. Wisconsinites could have their natural gas service lines eliminated. Restricting the use or eliminating natural gas service lines renders all gas-powered home appliances useless, including kitchen stoves, water heaters, furnaces, clothes dryers, fireplaces, and air conditioners.
