It’s Back to School Time!

The new school year is on the horizon. While parents cringe at the inevitable shopping rush and students excitedly look forward to the prospect of filling a cart with fresh back-to-school supplies and new clothes, the reality is that back to school shopping can be overwhelming and time-consuming. It’s a challenge to track down each item on a lengthy list and a feat of Olympic proportions when shopping for two or more children.

Shopping for school supplies.

School Budget Highlights

  • Our budget provides strong support for our public schools and the school choice programs, empowering parents to choose the school and type of education that is best for their child.
  • Republicans continued funding public schools at our goal of two-thirds state funding, while also increasing funding for key categorical aids like special education, mental health and high-cost transportation aid.
  • We provided a $325 per pupil increase in each year of the biennium—totaling $975 per student in new revenue over the biennium.

The Legislature

  • $50M to address reading and literacy.
  • $360M Choice and Charter School funding.
  • $4.6M for high-cost special education aid.
  • $30M Student mental health aid.
  • $500K Recovery High School Grants (students recovering from substance use disorders).
The Governor

  • Allowed for massive property tax hikes over the next 400+ years.
  • Rejected $750,000 for Lakeland STAR academy, a school supporting students with autism and unique learning needs.
  • Rejected extending the date of early-learning pilot programs which are designed to help pre-K children.
