This past Wednesday [January 25, 2023], the legislature was visited by local members of the Credit Union League, as well as their policy directors. It was great to hear of the local impact that Credit Unions have in our communities. Rather than being profit-driven, such as banks and other financial institutions, credit unions strive to payback their members with better interest rates.
The past two weeks at the legislature has been busy! Here is a brief legislative update on what we have been working on:
- My Beat Patrol bill (AB777) passed on the Assembly floor, this piece of legislation was also passed on the Senate floor. It will now go to the Governor’s desk where he will hopefully sign this bill into law; in doing so, providing our police departments with much needed resources to specifically target the increasing rates of violent crimes throughout Wisconsin.
- My bill, Assembly bill 475, which would require that estimated interest rates be on the ballot in the event that a Referendum is being voted by constituents in their respective community, successfully passed out of the Senate Committee on Government Operations, Legal Review and Consumer Protection on January 20th. With this piece of legislation having passed committee in both the Assembly and Senate, we will be looking to have them voted on the floor and sent to the Governor. This is a great transparency bill and am hopeful the Governor will do the right thing by signing this much needed legislation in to law.
- Additionally, the State Assembly met twice over the past two weeks. Once on January 20th, during which we voted to pass legislation spanning from comprehensive firearm education for Wisconsin High Schoolers (AB843), to statutes relating to the employment of minors (AB324). Subsequently have met on January 25th where we voted on a package of law enforcement and public safety bills. A few examples are: AB776: providing penalties to those who damage or graffiti certain historical properties, AB829: mandatory minimum sentence for three or more convictions for retail theft.
