Troubling Vetoes

Over the past few weeks, Governor Tony Evers has issued a series of vetoes that are badly out of touch with what most Wisconsin families want and need. Two stand out in particular: his decision to double down on last year’s massive 400-year property tax increase, and his bizarre veto of Assembly Bill 105 that would have required age verification on pornography websites to help protect our kids.

Governor Evers vetoed legislation that would have mandated age verification for pornographic websites, calling it an “intrusion into personal privacy.” By quietly issuing the veto on Good Friday, he avoided public scrutiny on an issue where 70-80% of Wisconsinites across both parties support protecting children from harmful content. At the same time, he used a partial veto to lock in a 400 year school spending increase that will be paid for by property taxpayers for generations to come. Instead of working to address affordability, he chose to mock working families on social media while continuing to play politics.

This kind of veto power allows the governor to rewrite laws in ways the Legislature never intended. According to the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty, this $325 annual increase will balloon into nearly $5 billion per year in K-12 spending by 2043, with total state aid and property taxes rising by an estimated $57 billion over the next 20 years. Wisconsin families are already struggling with higher costs, and these vetoes only make the burden heavier.

It’s time for real solutions that lower taxes and protect our children, not more political games from the governor’s office.
