Fox Valley Conservatives (FVC) held their monthly public forum on September 14, 2026. Ewa Prunty gave an excellent presentation about growing up in Communist Poland, joining the Solidarity resistance movement, and escaping the country in 1981. She offered passionate testimony about the benefits of living in a free America versus a communist country and warned against sliding too far toward socialism in future elections.
Ewa explained that in Communist countries, the government owns the means of production and there is very little incentive for innovation and advancement. She grew up in the 1970s with both parents being specialized physicians: They had one of the few cars in the area, and neighbors would visit to watch their television. Dissension against the system was actively and often brutally suppressed.
Ewa recounted the history of the beginnings of Solidarity in 1980, the imposition of martial law, the arrest of the leaders of Solidarity in late 1981, and the release of the leaders and growing resistance movement from 1984–1988. In the spring of 1989, there were free elections in Poland that overturned the Communist government.
Ewa, at that time 22 years old and an active member of Solidarity, was visiting her husband in Austria in 1981 when martial law was imposed. Her 4-year-old daughter was staying with family in Poland. Ewa would have been arrested if she returned. She and her husband made the difficult decision to leave their daughter and immigrate to the United States, eventually Green Bay, in 1983. Her mother-in-law bribed a Polish official, allowing their daughter to obtain a one-way passport, leave Poland, and join Ewa and her husband in 1982.
Several children attended Ewa’s presentation, held at FreedomProject Academy in Appleton. Ewa encouraged them to read history, and to understand that no one ran to the Communist side of Germany when the Berlin Wall came down.
